Unconventional wisdom: Eclipse Bank wraps 'build-it-slowly' philosophy in a posh package akin to upscale retailers

Some investors and bankers start banks to sell them, according to John Pendergrass. Others start banks to build them into "an enduring community asset."

Put him in the latter category, said Pendergrass, who is president of 2-year-old Eclipse Bank in St. Matthews. It is the Louisville market's first "de novo," or startup, bank since 1996.

To build what they term a full-service community bank, John Pendergrass and his wife, Mitzi Pendergrass, chief operating officer, seem to hold two seemingly contradictory strategies simultaneously.

At 3827 Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews, they have built a building that is unconventional inside and out to house both the corporate headquarters and banking operations.
