Heartland Payment Systems Breach Q&A

As you may have heard, Heartland Payment Systems, a national credit/debit card processing company for 250,000 merchants nationwide, recently announced a security breach in their processing system during 2008.

There is a possibility that a small number of Eclipse debit/credit cards may have been part of that Heartland issue.  No accounts to our knowledge have been affected, but as a precautionary measure Eclipse is reissuing debit and credit cards created during 2008. Eclipse meets or exceeds all regulatory and industry standards for the ongoing protection of your information.  We are simply re-issuing cards as a precaution to further strengthen that commitment to your privacy.

The information that was compromised at Heartland was not obtained through any Eclipse source.   For additional information on Heartland’s security breach, please see their website at www. 2008breach.com.  Again, we do not anticipate any problems with Eclipse accounts, but if you have any concerns please contact us any time at 502-671-4800.

Is my account affected?

Eclipse is not aware of any accounts that have been affected.  We are simply taking precautionary measures to ensure no Eclipse cards are compromised.  If you ever suspect fraudulent activity on any of your cards or accounts, please contact us immediately at (502) 671-4800.

Do I need to change my checking account numbers?  Was my identity stolen?

No.  The Heartland breach did not include any account numbers, Social Security numbers, PIN numbers, address and/or telephone numbers.  The information involved only card number, expiration date and cardholder name.   Your checking account number is NOT at risk.  Eclipse did NOT experience any fraudulent issues relating to the Heartland breach.  We are simply taking precautionary measures in case any cards were compromised.

How did this happen?

Heartland processes payments for more than 250,000 businesses nationwide.   At some point in 2008, Heartland discovered malicious software that compromised some transactions processed by the company.   You may have purchased an item at a store or restaurant that then processed that transaction through Heartland.  The breach, if it occurred, did NOT happen through any Eclipse channel.  Eclipse has had no accounts or cards affected by this breach.

If my debit card was affected, will my other accounts need to close?

No. The information that was compromised was unique only to debit/credit cards.  No actual account numbers were affected.  Eclipse has had NO reports of fraudulent activity as a result of the Heartland breach.

Which local merchants were involved in the breach?

We do not know the names of the companies affected.  Heartland provides processing for more than 250,000 merchants across the country.   Heartland is actively addressing the issue.  For more information, visit their website at http://www.2008breach.com.  No Eclipse accounts were affected by the breach to our knowledge.
